What is a crown?

When do you need a crown?

Crown and bridges are used to cover and protect a weak and damaged tooth. You might know it better as a ‘cap’.

Why do I need a crown?

It is used to cover a broken or decayed tooth, when too much of the original tooth is missing to hold a filling crowns are a preferable method. They also help protect a weak tooth from breaking.

What is a Bridge?

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth to the natural teeth on either side of the gap.

Why is it necessary?

A bridge may be necessary where a tooth is too badly decayed to save with a crown for replacing more than one missing tooth, bridges can be created to fill the space. The bridge is held in place by crowns secured to sound teeth on either side of the space.

What are they made of?

A crown or bridge can be made to match the colour of the natural teeth using porcelain or ceramic crown or porcelain fused to metal. There are other materials that also can be used which are often stronger than porcelain that may be recommended for the back teeth where there is less aesthetic value, these are often gold and metal alloys.

What to expect?

The crown preparation appointment is a slightly longer appoint which may take up to 75 min. During this procedure the clinician will need to numb you in order for you to have a comfortable experience on the chair. Once the dentist has completed the crown preparation, he will take an impression for which it will be sent to the lab, where they will create your crown/bridge. In the meantime, you’ll be given a temporary crown. You will need to come in after 5 business days in order to fit in the new lab work.

How Long do Crowns and Bridges Last?

Crowns and bridges can last a last a lifetime, however sometimes, they may come loose.

The key in long-lasting crowns is good hygiene and care. Oral hygiene and regular cleans are important foundation of crown and bridge longevity as they keep the supporting bone and gums around the tooth healthy.

To prevent damage to your new crown or bridge, avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects.
